On “Everything’s Thrilling,” Robert Pollard is once again up to his old tricks. This song is based on an open D note drone and a lot of the same chords he typically uses with this drone technique: D, G/D, and Cadd2. When you consider how many songs he’s already written that use these chords with the D note drone (“Christmas Girl,” “Know Me As Heavy,” “Flight Advantage,” to name a few), you’d think he’d have run out of ideas by now. Quite to the contrary, each sounds totally fresh and new, and such is also the case with “Everything’s Thrilling.”
