Holy Rhythm

By: Guided By Voices

Appears on: Zeppelin Over China

“Holy Rhythm” might be one of the heaviest-sounding songs on Zeppelin Over China, at least in terms of guitar tone (as well as drummer Kevin March’s incessant pounding on the toms). To my ears, it sounds like a wall of fuzz that’s at least three feet thick. To help achieve this sound, you’ll play inversions of some of the chords. This means that instead of having the root note be the lowest note in the chord, some of the chords will use the 5th note as the lowest (this is called 2nd inversion). For example, the C5 chord will use the G note on the sixth string as the lowest note instead of the C note on the fifth string.
