As I mentioned in the post for “Avalanche Aminos,” another song that was co-written by Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard is “Pop Zeus” from Speak Kindly Of Your Volunteer Fire Department. Just as in that song, Gillard wrote the music and recorded the instruments for “Pop Zeus” and sent his mix to Pollard to fill in the vocals. This song stayed in the band’s live set for a few years after Speak Kindly… was released, and the crowd went wild every time Gillard launched into that signature opening riff.
Doug Gillard was recently kind enough to show me how to play “Pop Zeus,” so this transcription is straight from the man himself!
